Animal Therapies Ltd (ATL) aims to advance the understanding, acceptance, and accessibility of animal-assisted services. As such, we provide the public with information on relevant services and training both nationally and internationally. Although all ATL registered service providers agree to abide by our Code of Ethics, presently, we are unable to actively monitor this requirement and, therefore, no specific recommendations can be made regarding the suitability of advertised services or courses. It is, instead, the responsibility of the individual to complete their own research when choosing a service provider to ensure that the training methods used meet their expectations.

When training therapy and assistance dogs, ATL supports the use of positive reinforcement (e.g., treats, verbal and physical praise, toys) in combination with negative punishment (e.g., turning your back as a puppy jumps, or withholding the treat until the dog responds appropriately) only. It does NOT support the use of positive punishment (e.g., shock collars, collar grabs, alpha rolls, punitive vocal tone) or negative reinforcement (e.g., adding of physical pressure on the lead that is then removed when the dog responds appropriately).

The decision not to support these training methods has been made to protect the welfare of the animals, and to protect the wellbeing of the human client (e.g., observing punishment and negative training techniques may be triggering or distressing for clients who have experienced or witnessed trauma, abuse or violence themselves.)
